Jet Lag Remedy

Anyone else in need of a jet lag remedy?

sleep jet lagAny person who’s been doing one or more long distance air travels knows how hard that can be. Even if the traveling in itself may be quite taxing both mentally and physically, this is not the hardest part at all. Ask anyone who has been changing time zones now and then; they will all sing to the same tune – it’s the jet lag that is the real "killer"!

Jet lag is being described by some as "a true curse of modern travel by air". It results in loss of working efficiency and holiday enjoyment, and it may do so for days after arrival. On some of my own International travels I have been troubled for nearly four days after arrival to my destination. Not pleasant at all.

Jetlag Studies

The Upjohn Company did a large scale US study in cooperation with British Air Ways and United Airlines. The study showed that as many as 94% of the long distance travelers suffered from jet lag effects. Out of these, 45% considered their symptoms bothersome to a severe extent.

International flight attendant showed a similar picture in a 1994 survey. 96% of the respondents said they suffered from jet lag. It should be noted that these people are absolutely being accustomed to the long-haul travels.

Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that up to 50% of travelers claim they suffer side effects or become ill after flying. Again, I can attest to this being more than myths. It is very rare that I catch a cold or the flu in my normal, day to day living. The exceptions? You guessed it – after a long flight…

Jet lag causes

The rapid transit across several time zones is the major contributer. The difference in time disrupts our internal body clock (called ‘circadian rhythm’). In turn this will — to a varying degree — affect our physiological patterns, blood pressure, body temperature and heartbeat – something which leads to sleeping problems, disorientation, physical and mental fatigue.

jet lag causesAlso sitting still in our seats for long periods at the time in an airplane, may without a doubt cause discomfort and possible swelling of the legs and feet (tell me about it…). The dry atmosphere in airliner cabins is a common cause of your body drying out. High altitudes and pressure changes at landing and takeoff may also upset your systems. Together with the time zone problems, these changes are significant causes of jet lag – making us all wish for a simple and effective jet lag remedy.

What’s a poor boy (or girl) gonna do?

The good news is that there are things you can do to alleviate the negative side effects of jet lag, some times even get rid of it all together. In the following will present my own search for a jet lag remedy, and guide you to the things I have personally used to combat this problem.
